The Civil War was one of the most difficult and trying times during American history. The war ended with the the Union and Confederate states torn apart over one major issue: slavery. With the end of the Civil War came the end of slavery in the United States. Although the former black slaves were now free, they had no land and very few rights, and most did not even have family. Though out reconstruction, blacks were able to gain rights, but were continuously repressed by the white Southerners. The only way to truly enfranchise the former slaves was by effectively disenfranchising their former masters. The reign the masters had over their former slaves disabled the slaves from trying to fulfill their lives as equal American citizens. Blacks would also have to pay a penalty if they were jumping contracts and moving from plantation to plantation; they could not leave the plantation. The whites were ba sically creating a â€Å"legal† system of slavery, which undermined the blacks newly acquired rights as a free citizen. Andrew Johnson would soon prove to be the oppressor in the fight for black equality during the time of reconstruction in the United States. First, the distribution of land was being brought about by a reconstruction-made institution, known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. The Freedmen’s Bureau provided food, clothing, education, and land to the blacks. By June 1865, the Bureau had settled nearly 10,000 black families on their own land, which was abandoned plantations. Just as the blacks were coming into and accepting their new freedom, the Southern white plantation owners were returning and demanding the return of their land. Andrew Johnson would support their demands and the government would eventually return all of the land. Qualities of an Executive Chef Essay Leadership Qualities of an Executive Chef Frankie Miranda Georgia Northwestern Technical College An Executive Chef is one who is in charge of the entire function of the kitchen which includes; menu creation, staff management, scheduling, payroll, ordering, and plate design. From this definition it is clear that to be a successful Executive Chef, one cannot rely on their abilities in Culinary Arts alone; they must also possess exceptional leadership qualities. A successful leader is one that able to lead a team of chefs and cooks from average to excellent. It is my belief that for anyone to be a successful leader, specifically in this discussion an Executive Chef, they should have positive characteristics in the following leadership styles: Personal, management, communication and accountability. 1. Personal Style: The Executive Chef should be excited about their work. Their team members should be inspired by them. The Executive Chef should be kind, nurturing, caring, patient, encouraging, efficient, and organized. They should be an individual that team members are not afraid of. 2. Management Style: The Executive Chef should always lead by example and always have a positive attitude. They should always be on time, meet deadlines, pay attention to detail, be persistent, and never lose track of the basics of the Culinary Arts: Quality, service, sanitation and safety. The Executive Chef should challenge their team to display their skills and talents; challenging them to continuously improve their skills and talents. 3. Communication Style: I believe that communication is the most important leadership quality. Without communication the team is not a team; and to be a successful team, there must be communication. The Executive Chef’s communication style should begin with always informing team members of anything new or any changes. A good tool to use would be a log book that would be used to inform the team of all situations of change, upcoming events, etc. The team members would be required to read and initial the log book before starting their shift. Additional communication tools that could be used are: Daily meetings before shift and formal weekly meetings. By having these meetings, everyone would feel included in the process and it would give an opportunity to celebrate successes from the week before and to introduce the menu, events, etc. for the current week. 4. Accountability: The Executive Chef should require team members in their supervision (i. e. Lead Cook, Sous Chefs) to possess the same leadership qualities as does the Executive Chef. The reason for this is to have a team that works together. Being held accountable creates a trusting environment. To ensure accountability of team members, a good tool to implement would be job descriptions for each position. This would allow the team member to know what exactly is expected of them in their position and would allow the Executive Chef a tool to measure their performance. Two good laws that I ran across regarding accountability are: Accountability Law #1 â€Å"Whatever you accept from your least effective team member becomes the minimum acceptable standard for the whole team. † – Don Miller. Accountability Law #2 â€Å"Failure to hold team members accountable for doing their jobs in accordance with the established standards creates an unfair work environment. This unfairness can escalate to an overwhelmingly negative work environment delivering poor food, poor service, hostility and high turnover. † – Don Miller. After reading different articles and chef biographies, I have a better understanding for the need of an Executive Chef to have good leadership qualities. He does not spill a single drop of liquor on the counter and when he leaves the bar, he walks with dignity instead of unsteady walk. The older age of the man had been regarded to a stage where there are no hopes left but the fear of darkness at home (Hemingway). The darkness had been used as a symbol of death. (Hemingway 8) In reply to the question of the young waiter, the older waiter answers from his experience stating that older stage of life is full of fear of darkness (death). The older waiter states that the older man was in a progression towards old weary day s that ends with death (Hemingway). Through the above analysis of the traits of the three characters of the story A Clean, well lighted Place, it comes to our understanding that the old man was in a progression of an older age and had similar personality traits as the older waiter had. [] I hear and read more people using try and [do something] but that doesnt seem as logical as try to [do something].   Is there a difference between the two terms?   If not, is one to be preferred?   I’m always amused when objections to idioms are raised on grounds of logic. â€Å"Try and† followed by a coordinate verb is an idiom; idioms don’t have to be logical. Nevertheless, a lot of speakers object to the use of â€Å"try and do† instead of â€Å"try to do.† What do the authorities think? Merriam-Webster is unambiguously supportive: Almost all disparaging criticism of â€Å"try and† comes from American critics; British commentators have generally been tolerant. There appears to be no rational basis for hostility to the expression and no need to avoid it in appropriate surroundings. The OED includes an entry for â€Å"try and,† but still labels it as a colloquialism. OxfordDictionaries observes that â€Å"In practice there is little discernible difference in meaning, although there is a difference in formality, with try to being regarded as more formal than try and.† Even M-W, with the reference to â€Å"appropriate surroundings† implies that â€Å"try to† is preferable for formal use. But is there, as our reader asks, a difference between such wordings as, â€Å"Try and stop complaining† and â€Å"Try to stop complaining†? Fowler discerned a difference: Though â€Å"try to do† can always be substituted for â€Å"try and do,† the latter has a shade of meaning that justifies its existence; in exhortations it implies encouragementthe effort will succeed; in promises it implies assurancethe effort shall succeed. It is an idiom that should be not discountenanced, but used when it comes natural. A Columbo episode has the title â€Å"Try and Catch Me.† A rebellious teenager might respond to a request by saying, â€Å"Try and make me.† In discussing a modern painting, art critic Sister Wendy says, â€Å"I’ll try and make sense of it.† In each of these examples, the and conveys something to would not. Perhaps we can add â€Å"effort† to Fowler’s â€Å"exhortation and promises.† How correct is Fowler’s statement that â€Å"try to do can always be substituted for try and do†? As a rule, it has its pitfalls. For example, consider the following headline and sentence: Two Judges Try and Fail to Shut Down Union Rights It’s better to try and regret, than not to try and regret. In the first example, changing the â€Å"try and† to â€Å"try to† would leave the reader wondering why the judges tried to fail in their purpose: â€Å"Two judges try to fail to shut down union rights.† Changing â€Å"try and† to â€Å"try to† in the second example would result in the sentence, â€Å"It’s better to try to regret, than not to try to regret.† The original sentence, however, means something very different: â€Å"It’s better to try [to do something] and regret [having tried], than not to try [doing something] and [then] regret [not having tried].† The note at OxfordDictionaries includes an explanation as to why â€Å"try and† remains questionable in formal usage despite its ubiquity in conversation: The construction try and is grammatically oddin that it cannot be inflected for tense (e.g. sentences like she tried and fix it or they are trying and renew their visa are not acceptable, while their equivalents she tried to fix it or they are trying to renew their visa undoubtedly are). For this reason try and is best regarded as a fixed idiom used only in its infinitive and imperative form. Assess Kant's ethics of duty and freedom as a response to all previous ethical theories - Essay Example In his "Critique on Pure Reason" Kant portrays a view of rationalists such as Descartes as being overly concerned with divinity and divine intervention. He felt that the preoccupation with the role of God in the control of human thoughts, feelings and actions posed a very clear contradiction to the inherent will of man. He adamantly opposed the philosophy of Descartes in that he feels that Descartes reaffirmed his existence of God by alluding to the notion that conceptualizing something in one's mind actually makes it real. Essentially his fundamental problem was with the notion of "I think therefore I am" as proposed by Descartes. He argued that making a presumption that something exists and using that presumption as proof of the same bears no merit in arriving at the truth. Moreover, Kant objected to the passivity attributed to the human mind by the rationalists. His objection to the empiricist school of thought can be found in the fact that empiricists such as Locke portrayed an incomplete view of the mind and human motivation. He felt that the empiricist viewpoint was somewhat esoteric in nature in that it was effective in arriving at the notion that the mind was a "blank table" but it failed to expand on its implications. His main criticism could be found in the notion that empiricism often underestimated the role of reasoning in the construction of a knowledge base. He felt that empiricists viewed the mind as a passive entity while in Kant's view the mind was an active entity in which the individual plays a pivotal role in the way in which knowledge is produced. In so doing, perceptions are subject to the assessment of the individual knower and not the reverse as proposed by the empiricists. Kant was very ingenious in his use of the theories of his predecessors for arriving at a distinct theory of his own. He was able to utilize the notion of passivity of the mind in the formation of his clear and concise contradictory theory. According to Kant humans are autonomous beings and as such are capable of real self-governance. He feels that there ought not to be boundaries or limitations placed on the goodness of the human will and the real human freedom to choose. The human propensity to heteronymous influences from emotions and external norms makes them slaves to outside influences which will lead them to act immorally. Heteronomy in Kant's philosophy is the subjection to the imposition of moral choices that are exterior to the autonomy of the human will, for example in response to desires for some benefit, out of fear of unwanted repercussions to an action, or through the influence of others. A heteronymous will is constrained to act from subjective calculations or from rul es that have been set from outside and consequently lacks real freedom. An autonomous will chooses freely from pure principle on its own assessment of the objective goodness of an action that can be judged to qualify as a maxim for universal application. In his duty theory, Kant expresses the notion that there is an underlying moral law that all should adhere to and theorizes that the singular motivation for human actions should be duty and respect for the independent moral good. He maintains that the fundamental principle at the basis of all moral duties is a categorical imperative. Rhetorical Analysis compare Essay This is a rhetorical essay comparing, Looking At Women, written by Scott Russell Sanders; and What Is A Homosexual?, Written by Andrew Sullivan. These two essays describe in detail how children are growing up and knowing at an early age that they are either heterosexual or homosexual. When comparing these two essays both boys are going through puberty, watching their body change and develop. Mr. Sanders essay is about boys learning when they are attracted to girls, usually its around the time they are going through puberty; while Mr. Sullivan essay is about when boys learn that they are attracted to boys. This also was when the boy went through puberty. Looking At Women is about when a boy realizes his body and mind are changing towards girls, and realizes his attraction toward girls. When you can look at a girl, and realize it is the opposite sex. Mr. Sanders talks about how should the male figure look at the female when they display their body with little to no clothing. He goes on to explain that its natural for us to look at the opposite sex. We as humans are curious in the opposite sex, so our eyes naturally wander and look. Upon reading these essays I realized we all go through puberty and that is basically when we find ourselves. Our wants and desires for either the same or the opposite sex. Having said that, what if you were not attracted to the opposite sex, but were attracted to the same sex. What Is A Homosexual is a persuasive essay about gay adolescents realizing they are attracted to the same sex at an early age. Mr. Sullivan realizes his attraction to the same sex after he went through puberty as the boy in Mr. Sanders essay noticing his attractions to girls. Both boys have to control their desires to look at either the opposite sex or the same sex. I realized that both boys are going through similar situations under different circumstances. While the  homosexual cant not be caught looking at another male while dressing in the locker room. But, the heterosexual can look at the opposite sex and want be picked on. In todays society the clothes for girls has changed sense I was a preteen and going through puberty. The preteens now wear little clothing as possible to show off their developing figure into a woman. This will attract the eyes of the young male thats also going through puberty, and doesnt want to be caught staring at the developing young female. This is also similar to the young boy that is having homosexual thoughts in the locker room. He has to control his action of staring at his same sex friend that has change over the summer from puberty. Both the boys are going through similar situations, one is with the same sex while the other is the opposite sex, finding sexual attraction and the urge to look and their desires for the other person. While Looking At Women and What Is A Homosexual seem very different, they are quite similar. The boys are going through the same body changes and realizing the attraction to either girls or guys. The boys are sorting out their desires on how to look at the other person weather its the opposite sex or the same. Interesting enough the boys learn to control their wandering eyes, and when its appropriate to look at either gender.
